Name: Elektra Natchios
Canon: Marvel Comics
Age: late 30s; let’s say 36
Appearance: one
two
Canon Point: Elektra: Reverence; after Matchmaker’s death
Background: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elektra_(character)
CRAU: n/a
Personality:
Warning: There will be talk of self-harm/mental illness/violence below.
Elektra used to be the idealistic dreamer with plans to save the world. While there was darkness even in these more innocent times, the fact remains that she was once the person who would have been the kind hero who always does the right thing. She loved the world deeply and planned to serve it as a diplomat like her father before her. Trouble was she loved two people more than the world and her ideals: Matt Murdock and her father. Each would be part of her downfall. When her father was killed, Elektra completely shut down. She felt betrayed by the world and abandoned it in her grief. That idealism, her sense of right and wrong, did not completely go away though. She still tried do what she perceived to be the right thing: infiltrate the Hand, an evil ninja death cult, and destroy them from the inside after learning their secrets. That led to more heartbreak as they tricked her into killing her beloved martial arts teacher. She ends up joining the Hand anyways, is nearly broken by them, before getting out just before they can completely destroy her soul.
This demonstrates who Elektra is in a nutshell. She is someone who tries to do what she perceives is right, gets hurt for it, shuts down, but manages to save herself in the end. This is an ongoing pattern in her life. As a result, she does her best to stay in a place where she cannot be touched emotionally. She tries desperately to bury her feelings. There is no better example of this than her dealings with the surviving object of her affection, Matt Murdock. Whenever he is threatened, she makes a big show about how she is not going to get involved. The second it looks like he’s going to lose his life, safety, or really anything of value she steps in. She protects Karen Page in prison because she knows how much Matt cares for her. She allows herself to be murdered in order to keep Matt safe from a possessed Wolverine.
This also happens with strangers too. Her friendship with Wolverine started because she felt sympathy for his loss of control over himself. It was something she related to as someone who was constantly in danger of being taken over by others. She stepped in (with a push from Stick) to spare him from the same pain she experienced. The same happens with a man who was tortured by the woman he raped. She steps in to save him after he repents for his actions, but the woman is too blinded by rage to accept his heartfelt apology. She also helps out a boy whose father is an assassin because even though he hurt her, she understands why better than anyone. A father’s love still drives her actions to this day.
This brings us to her identity or rather her lack of one. Elektra is someone who is defined by those around her. She is a daughter, a slave, a girlfriend, hero, or assassin. She never truly feels like an independent person. A large part of this is because she has suffered from various (and frankly poorly defined) mental illnesses since she was a child. Elektra has always only struggled with feelings of emptiness. It even drove her to try to slit her wrists once as a child in order to feel something. Her perception of reality is at times warped too. She hallucinates occasionally. One example of this is when she is remembering her father’s death and makes it more violent and disturbing than it actually was. Another happens while fighting the Hand; she pictures herself dancing with ribbons in a studio while in reality she is cutting them to pieces with her weapons. She also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder from, well, everything. Her murder(s), the loss of her parents, her various kidnappings and torture all left her mentally scarred.
To make a long story short: Elektra is an incredibly damaged woman with a good heart underneath it all. It is hard to see because she keeps denying it exists. It also does not help that her morals do not match the heroes of the Marvel Universe. She kills to both survive and for money. Sure, they are all bad people, but it is easy to see why most of the hero community thinks badly of her. It is also easy to understand why she doesn’t care that this alienates her. After losing everyone she has ever loved with one exception, she does not want to forge new connections. It is why she speaks sparingly and communicates with body language if she ever bothers at all.
Elektra wants to be alone and safe from further grief. She is haunted enough by those she lost. Trouble is she cannot help herself. She keeps stepping in when necessary to fight the Hand, save her first love, or someone who is definitely screwed without her. The cycle continues. All she can do is keep moving forward.
Weaknesses/Temptations:
Pride: Elektra has a superiority complex about her abilities and appearance.
Denial: Elektra will do just about anything to prove she doesn’t feel something for someone. It’s pretty easy to exploit. On the flip side of things, she will often make stupid decisions if someone accidentally triggers her many awful memories.
She also likes really nice things?
Sins: She’s an assassin so she is guilty of a lot of things. Here are her most common sins:
Murder
Lying
Forgery
Stealing
Assault
Destruction of property… corrupt states… Really anything that gets in her way.
Powers/Abilities: She's a master assassin and a ninja. She's been training in martial arts since she was like five. Thanks to her creator Frank Miller she also has a set of weird psychic abilities that let her enter the minds of others and possess/influence them. She has complete control of her nervous system so she can turn off her ability to feel pain/extreme conditions/slow down her heart. She can speak telepathically with others in her ninja group aka the Chaste (whoever is even still alive at this point) and members of the Hand. Oh and Wolverine that one too. She is also an expert in all weapons (seriously) though the sai are her preference. Also sometimes ghosts are drawn to her because she died so many times and she can see them. It's a whole thing.
